College Advising
College advising is the primary purpose of Futuros. By advising low-income and immigrant students on how to prepare for college, guiding them through the application process, and helping them apply for financial aid, Futuros will help them become college-ready and successfully persist through higher education.
Application Assistance
Futuros provides college application assistance for high school students who will attend a community college or university as well as college students who wish to attend graduate school. Application assistance takes place through one-on-one mentoring and advising as well as through group workshops. One-on-one advising and group workshops will include line-by-line application assistance as well as assistance with writing personal statements, admissions essays, and developing an academic resume.
Fundraising for College
Low-income and immigrant students are often in the greatest need of financial aid to pay for their college education. Futuros will assist students in their fundraising efforts through individualized advising, guidance, and support in the development of strong scholarship applications. Those students who are not eligible for financial aid or scholarships will be guided through the process of developing an academic portfolio that they may use to solicit donations from private donors and others.
Group Workshops
Futuros will provide various workshops related to preparing for college, applying to college, and securing funds for college. Workshops will include information about college requirements, college application deadlines and procedures, as well as fundraising for college.
Professional Development
Futuros provides professional development workshops for high school counselors and college-based professionals who serve low-income and immigrant students. Because these students have unique and diverse needs, Futuros aims to ensure that the professionals who work with them are well informed about the post-secondary opportunities available to their students. In addition, professionals will be taught how to incorporate college knowledge specific to low-income and immigrant students into their established college preparatory activities.
