College Fundraising Workshops for Undocumented Students and Families
Oscar de La Hoya Animo Charter High School
On January 15th members of the Futuros Board and staff provided bilingual college fundraising workshops to approximately 100 students and parents at Oscar de La Hoya Animo Charter High school. Both workshops included information about policies that shape college access for undocumented immigrant students, procedural aspects of applying to college, and fundraising for college. The latter included tips on developing a competitive scholarship application and fundraising portfolio.
College & Fundraising Opportunity Workshop for Undocumented Students
Locke High School
On February 21st the Futuros Executive Director and one Student Board Member conducted a workshop for approximately 50 Locke High School students. The audience included students in grades 9-12 but consisted primarily of juniors and seniors. The workshop included information about the policies that shape college access for AB540 students, information about college and fundraising opportunities for AB540 students, and practical tips on how to successfully apply to and secure funding for college. During each aspect of the presentation the Student Board Member interjected with practical advice and insight based on her experiences as an AB540 student.
College & Financial Aid Opportunity Student Assembly
Jefferson High School
On February 26th the Futuros Executive Director participated in two assemblies at Jefferson High School to share information about college and financial aid opportunities for undocumented immigrant students. Although many of the 500 students present were not undocumented, the information presented was beneficial to all in attendance. Teachers and counselors were also present at both assemblies.
Best Practices Workshop for Education Professionals
College Counselors of Los Angeles (CCOLA) Conference
On March 6th members of the Futuros Board and staff conducted two informational workshops for approximately 75 middle and high school counselors as part of the CCOLA Conference at Loyola Marymount University. Presenters included the Futuros Executive Director, one Board Member, and one Student Board Member. The workshops consisted of information about policies and practices that shape college access for undocumented students, statistics on how many undocumented students exist nationwide, information about challenges encountered by undocumented students in their pursuit of higher education, tips and best practices for counselors on addressing these challenges, and information about immigration services and other community resources. During each aspect of the presentation the Student Board Member interjected with practical advice and insight for counselors based on her experiences as an AB540 student.
